Carriage Driving is perfect for:
- Adults who are new to horses and /or hessitant to ride.
- Horse lovers who are no longer able to ride comfortably
- An alternative to riding for all ages
- An additional way to enjoy your horse
- Horses for whom riding is a problem. Many horses are comfortable in harness that can not carry the weight of a rider.
Carriage Driving 101 - An Introduction to the Sport
A full weekend beginning Friday evening through Sunday
In this workshop, you will receive an introduction to carriage driving. Come explore the world of carriage driving and its many opportunities for fun. We will present an overview of competitions, types of vehicles and harnesses, safety and more safety. You will receive 12 hours of instruction including plus an additional private driving lesson.
Offered: April 25-27 and again on May 20-June 1
Friday Afternoon/Evening: 6 pm - 10 pm
You may arrive any time after 2 pm and explore the farm. If you are staying at the B&B, check in is between 3 and 5 pm.
We will gather at The Grapevine Restaurant for a get-acquainted dinner. Afterwards, we will have a video presentation.
Saturday Morning: 8 am - 12 pm
We will spend the time in the barn learning about safety, types of harness and harness materials, how to choose and fit a harness, carriage types and uses.
Saturday Afternoon: 1 pm - 6 pm
Each student will receive a private driving lesson either Saturday or Sunday afternoon. This will give you an opportunity to take up the reins and experience driving for yourself. Other students are welcome to stay and audit the lessons or the may opt to visit Mt. Magazine or the wonderful shops in Paris.
Saturday Evening:
We will reconvene for an evening meal and to go over the events of the day. After dinner we will have another presentation as well as a question and answer session.
Sunday Morning: 8 am - 12 pm
We will again be in the barn early to apply what we have learned by harnessing horses and putting the horse to the cart. You will learn the steps to safely hook a horse and the key adjustments between horse and carriage. The second half of the morning, we will work on ground driving and have a mini competition as we ground drive a cones course.
Sunday Morning: 8 am - 12 pm
The remaining private lessons will be given and, once again, you may audit. Additional lessons available if time allows.
